Former Washington State Representative Brady Piñero Walkinshaw was a candidate for Washington’s 7th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives in the 2016 elections. Walkinshaw is very active in non-violence and is openly gay.
Following the 2016 terrorist attack in Orlando, Walkinshaw and staff wanted to honor the lives lost in Orlando during the Seattle Pride March with Washington Won’t Discriminate. Their message was to be around pride and taking action against gun violence while still circling back to Walkinshaw.
In order to pay respect to the families of the victims, I incorporated the phrase "Stand with Orlando," which was being used on social media to spread support globally. During the aftermath of the attack, many wore rainbow lapels to show their support. Being that it was also during Seattle Pride, I knew I wanted to include the rainbow in some way.
I created a banner to display the "Stand with Orlando" phrase. The banner relates back to the rainbow flag without being too blocky. My original design included three gradients for a series of stickers with the intention of a group wearing them and coming together to create the rainbow. However, the final version of the sticker included one full-rainbow gradient to lower costs.
